Omaha World-Herald (NE) — By Richard E. Hawley, General, US Air Force (Retired) —
Kudos to former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and former New York City Schools Chancellor Joel Klein for leading a task force that recognizes the connection between education and national security.
The retired generals and admirals of Mission: Readiness have been raising this issue for some time.
However, the task force misses one of the most effective ways to address this problem. High-quality early childhood education is a proven way to improve later academic performance and increase graduation rates.
It also helps children learn the essential social skills that are so important for success, whether in the military or any career.
We have an opportunity to help ensure that children succeed in school and throughout life so that they are qualified and eligible to serve our country in any way they choose.
We must invest more in high-quality early learning so that our education crisis does not become a national security crisis.
